Although Puerto Rico is part of the U.S., the census lists Puerto Rican as an ancestry for those living in the 50 states.

In the 2000 census, 3,406,178 people in the U.S. claimed Puerto Rican heritage. Many have settled in the New York metro area or in Florida.
