The community was named for Herman Le Roy, landholder.

Former and merged names include:
· Bellona
Birthplace of Jell-O. In 1897, cough medicine manufacturer Pearl B. Wait came up with fruit-flavored gelatin and began making it in strawberry, raspberry, lemon and orange flavors. Wait sold the business to his neighbor, Orator Francis Woodward, for $450.

Jell-O left Le Roy in 1964; it is now manufactured by Kraft Foods

Automaker Henry Ford, on his way home from a camping trip with Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone, was stopped for speeding here in 1922. The Model T was actually driven by his chauffeur; Ford never possessed a driver's license.
Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 3. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 0.7 per 1,000 people.
