It is the county seat.

The community was named for the Erie Canal locks still in evidence here.

Lockport is on the New York State Barge Canal.
The locks, known as the Lockport "Fives" or "Combines," were among the greatest achievements of the canal engineers. The locks enabled boats to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment, a 70-foot shift in elevation.
Well-known residents have included:
· Birdsill Holly, inventor of the fire hydrant
· William G. Gregory, astronaut
· John Raskob, chairman of General Motors and of the Democratic National Committee
