Lockport is on the New York State Barge Canal.

The locks, known as the Lockport "Fives" or "Combines," were among the greatest achievements of the canal engineers. The locks enabled boats to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment, a 70-foot shift in elevation.

Well-known residents have included:
