Fort Smith is near the Oklahoma border.

Site of fort established in 1817 to head off conflict between the Osage and the Cherokee, who had been forced here from their homeland in the East.

Outlaws Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker hid out at a local tourist court in 1933, after a car accident in which Bonnie was severely burned.

Nearby Camp Chaffee was a training camp for soldiers of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
