In the infamous Scottsboro case, nine black youths were indicted here in 1931 on charges of having raped two white girls. Doctors who examined the girls declared no rapes had occurred, but eight of the defendants were convicted and sentenced to death. Most of the defendants were eventually freed, after the case became a cause celebre in the civil rights movement

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 13. The number of murders and homicides was 1. The violent crime rate was 0.9 per 1,000 people.
