Served as George Washington's headquarters, 1782-1783. It was here that he rejected a proposal that he serve as "king" of a new American monarchy

Once an important whaling port and shipping point for upstate farmers. Later developed as a manufacturing city

The community declined with the factory closings, which began in the 1950s
