Salem is a city in McCook County, in the Sioux Falls metro area.
It is the county seat.
The community was named for Salem, MA. For a time, it was known as Melas (Salem spelled backward) to avoid confusion with Salena, SD. With the demise of that community, Salem assumed its rightful spelling.
