Sullivans Island is on Charleston Harbor.
Thousands of slaves taken from Africa and shipped to America landed here between 1619 and 1808.

Fort Moultrie, built here during the Revolution to protect Charleston harbor from the British, was one of the sites from which Confederate troops shelled Fort Sumter in 1861.

Charlestonians started building summer cottages on the island in the early 1800s.
