Lt. Oliver Hazard Perry arrived in 1813 to supervise construction of a small fleet. The community boomed during the steamship era.

The port now handles shipments of ore, lumber, salt and machinery.

Roots: Many residents can trace their heritage to a small German village called Limersheim.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 447. The number of murders and homicides was 3. The violent crime rate was 4.4 per 1,000 people.
