Rye is on the north shore of Long Island Sound.
Founded by Connecticut farmers

The Rye-Oyster Bay ferry began service in 1739. The community later became a stop on the New York-Boston stagecoach line.

Developed as a summer resort in the 19th century. After World War I, Rye became a commuters' suburb.
