Settled in 1655 by six pioneers who bought land from the Setalcott Indians. No townsman was permitted to sell land to an outsider and no one could move into the settlement with a favorable vote from those already living there

During English rule, a local revolutionary named Ann Strong worked out a signaling system to tell colonial whaleboats when they could land. The laundry hung on her clothesline told the shipmen when the British were expected
