Mansfield is in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains

Johnny Appleseed saved the settlement during the War of 1812 by summoning troops to fend off Indian attack

Industrial growth occurred after arrival of the railroad; by the 1920s, the city had become a major manufacturer of electric lighting and home appliances

The business district declined with construction of regional shopping centers and malls. When comedian Bill Cosby visited in 1984, he joked about the emptiness of North Main Street. His remarks sparked development of what is now known as Richland Carrousel Park
