Massillon is on the Tuscarawas River.

Developed as a major grain market with construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal

The arrival of the railroad in 1852 brought industrial growth. Local factories made glass and pig iron. Inventor Joseph Davenport founded the Massillon Bridge Company here
