Profile for Oberlin, Ohio, OH

The village and the college were founded together, in 1833, by the Rev. John J. Shipherd and Philo Penfield Stewart.

In 1858, local people rescued an escaped slave who had been seized by slave hunters. 37 people were jailed, accused of violating the Fugitive Slave Law.
