The community name derives from Dutch for "states."

Giovanni da Verrazano dropped anchor here in 1524, but didn't stay long.

Construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn in 1964 sparked a housing boom

During the massive immigration to New York in the mid-1800s, a quarantine area was established here. Nursing staff, allowed to come and go at will, soon infected the local populace. After years of protest, townspeople set fire to the compound in 1858.
