Founded as a railroad town in 1898

The first atomic bomb, produced at the Manhattan Project laboratory in Los Alomos, was exploded in a test 60 miles from here in July 1945.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 93. The number of murders and homicides was 1. The violent crime rate was 2.6 per 1,000 people.
