Los Alamos is in the Santa Fe National Forest.
Site of the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atomic bomb. The head of the project, J. Robert Oppenheimer, brought in other well-known scientists, such as Enrico Fermi and Edward Teller.
Los Alamos received national attention for May 2000 fires, caused by a control burn set by the National Park Service.
