Cape May is at the southern end of Cape May Peninsula, on the Atlantic Ocean.

Once a whaling port. Capt. Kidd filled his water casks here; so did British warships during the War of 1812.

Cape May began to flourish as a seashore resort after the War of 1812 and was soon considered the nation?s summer capital.

In its heyday, visitors included Henry Clay and Presidents Lincoln, Grant, Pierce, Buchanan and Harrison.

Known for its many Victorian homes, known as "painted ladies." The entire community has been designated a national historic district.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 11. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 2.8 per 1,000 people.
