Settled as a Quaker colony by John Fenwick in 1675

In 1820, when many believed tomatoes to be poisonous, Col. Robert Gibbon Johnson ate at least one (some say a bushel) on the steps of the Salem courthouse. His survival is said to have convinced farmers to begin growing the plant

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 76. The number of murders and homicides was 1. The violent crime rate was 13.1 per 1,000 people.
