· Squamscott

Settled in 1638 as one of the first four townships of New Hampshire. Served as state capital in the early days of the Revolution

John Phillips founded his academy here in 1781, declaring his purpose to teach students "the great end and real business of living." The motto carved on the main academy building says, "Come hither, boys, that you may become men."

Graduates of Phillips Exeter include Gore Vidal and Robert Benchley
