New Bern is at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers.
Settled by German and Swiss families. After the Revolution, the city prospered through exports of tobacco, molasses and lumber to New England ports

New Bern had one of the largest population of free blacks before and after the Civil War. During the war, the city served as Union headquarters for Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside

Caleb Bradham invented a drink here in 1898 which he later patented as Pepsi-Cola
