Kansas City is at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers.

Fran?ois Chouteau established a trading post for the American Fur Company here in 1821. The community later served as a gateway for pioneers and forty-niners headed west.

With the arrival of the railroads, Kansas City became a hub for stockyards, cattle trading and grain markets. Known in the 1930s as a center of political corruption, under the regime of Democratic leader Thomas J. Pendergast.

The city's jazz tradition began in the area of 18th and Vine, where clubs featured the likes of Charlie "Bird" Parker and Count Basie.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 6,151. The number of murders and homicides was 82. The violent crime rate was 13.8 per 1,000 people.

Kansas City received national attention for the 1981 collapse of a walkway at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, killing 114 people.
