Saint Louis is on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

Pierre Lacl?de established a trading post here in 1763. The site quickly became a major fur-trading center. Steamboat traffic peaked in the 1850s.

Gateway for the great western expansion. Became a leading aerospace supplier in the 1970s-1980s, but lost thousands of defense-related jobs in the next decade.
