Castine is between the Bagaduce and Penobscot rivers, on Penobscot Bay.
A French trading post was built here in 1613.

The town was captured by British in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. When 44 Massachusetts ships tried to take Fort George during the Revolution, all were destroyed.
