The community was named after Lewis Falls, which had been named for an Indian who drowned here.

Lewiston is on the Androscoggin River.
Former textiles center. The mills closed as manufacturing moved south and abroad.
Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 79. The number of murders and homicides was 2. The violent crime rate was 2.2 per 1,000 people.
Lewiston received national attention for the mayor's public plea in 2002 to stop the influx of Somali immigrants. The mayor said he was concerned that social services would be strained to the breaking point. More than 1,000 Somali refugees had moved to the city in the previous two years.
