It is the county seat.

The community was named after Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall

When slavehunters captured escaped slave Adam Crosswhite here in 1846, townspeople rose to his support; a description of the case appear's in "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

The community once hoped to be the state capital; although the measure passed the state Senate in 1839, it was defeated in the house
