Sanford is on the Mousam River, in the foothills of the White Mountains

The town became a major textiles center after the Civil War. When the mills closed in the 1950s, more than 3,500 residents lost jobs

Local business owners began traveling the Northeast, convincing new employers to move to the area. Life magazine called Sanford "the town that refused to die"
