The community was named for Zacquill Morgan, founder.

Morgantown is on the Monongahela River.
Former and merged names include:
· Seneca
· Decker's Creek
· Greenmont
· South Morgantown
Iron ore was discovered here in 1789.

Townspeople objected to the railroad coming to town, so the line was built to nearby Fairmont instead.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation listed the community as one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations in 2007.
In a 2006 study, AllBusiness named Morgantown as the No. 10 best metro for women entrepreneurs.
