Wheeling is on the Ohio River.

Wheeling was settled by the Zane family, ancestors of author Zane Grey.

When the Wheeling Suspension Bridge was built in 1849, it was one of the world's longest span bridges. The bridge was swept away in an 1854 storm and later rebuilt.

The city is located on the site of the British Fort Fincastle. Wheeling served as an early capital of WV, from 1863 to 1870 and from 1875 to 1885.
