Wheeling is a city in Ohio County. (The community straddles Ohio and Marshall counties; ePodunk links to the county with the greater share of population.)
It is the county seat.
Tradition says the name derives from an Indian term for "place of the skull." Indians reputedly decapitated early settlers and placed their skulls on poles to warn others against encroachment.

When the Wheeling Suspension Bridge was built in 1849, it was one of the world's longest span bridges. The bridge was swept away in an 1854 storm and later rebuilt.
The city is located on the site of the British Fort Fincastle. Wheeling served as an early capital of WV, from 1863 to 1870 and from 1875 to 1885.
