Profile for Des Moines, Washington, WA

Des Moines is on Puget Sound, 15 miles south of Seattle.

Initial development of the community began in 1889 when F.A. Blasher bought the land.

Mills servicing the lumber industry opened soon thereafter.

In the 1930s, a highway was built that connected the community to Seattle and Tacoma, helping to stimulate the local economy.

Turning down the opportunity to become part of the ever-growing community of Kent, community residents voted to incorporate in 1959.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 109. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 3.7 per 1,000 people.
