Kirkland is a city in King County, in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area.
The community was named after Peter Kirk, English industrialist.

Kirk established a steel company in 1888. Planning for a big community commenced.
However, the nationwide financial crisis in 1893 doomed Kirk's plans for steel operations in Kirkland.
Kirkland incorporated in 1905.
Always a popular place to catch a ferry to Seattle, Kirkland became a ship building center in the 1910s with the completion of the Lake Washington Shipping Canal.
With the completion of bridges over Lake Washington, the first in 1940, Kirkland began to develop into a suburban community.
Kirkland annexed Houghton in 1968. Twenty years later, Juanita and Rose Hill followed.
