Mercer Island is in Lake Washington.
Former and merged names include:
· East Seattle
Settlement on the island began in the 1870s.

East Seattle, a community on the northwest side of the island, was established at the end of the 19th century.

Development and residents began to increase in the 1940s, when the first floating bridge connected the island to Seattle.

A city and town, both with the name Mercer Island, voted to incorporate in 1960. Ten years later, the town - which was the business district - merged with the city.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 16. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 0.7 per 1,000 people.
