Mercer Island is a city in King County, in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area.
The community was named for Judge Thomas Mercer, pioneer.

East Seattle, a community on the northwest side of the island, was established at the end of the 19th century.
Development and residents began to increase in the 1940s, when the first floating bridge connected the island to Seattle.
A city and town, both with the name Mercer Island, voted to incorporate in 1960. Ten years later, the town - which was the business district - merged with the city.
