Woodway is on Puget Sound.

David Whitcomb purchased 400 acres of land along Puget Sound and began subdividing it into a residential neighborhood in the 1910s. Lot sizes were deed restricted to a minimum of 2 acres.

The community incorporated, as town, in 1958 in an effort to protect the heavily forested area from development.

Woodway became a city in 1986, though locals still refer to it as a "town."
