Barre is on the Stevens Branch of the Winooski River.
The first granite quarry opened after the War of 1812. Business grew dramatically with construction of a rail line in 1875.

The area is still one of the nation's largest producers of granite gravestones. Among the famous who lie beneath Barre headstones: John D. Rockefeller and Harry Truman.

Scottish immigrants settled here, to work as granite-cutters and quarrymen.
Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 12. The number of murders and homicides was 1. The violent crime rate was 1.3 per 1,000 people.
