Bennington is on the Walloomsac River, along the New York border.
Capt. Samuel Robinson, who had camped here on his return from the French and Indian War, led settlers to the region in 1761.

The 1777 Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington, in which the Green Mountain Boys defeated British forces, actually took place two miles away, in New York.
