Altavista is a town in Campbell County, in the Lynchburg metro area.
The community was named for a farm owned by settler Henry Lane.

The community was incorporated, as a town, in 1912, the same year that the Lane Company, a box manufacturer, was founded.
The community more than doubled its small size in 1977 with an annexation of outlying areas.
