Colonial Beach is on the Potomac River.

Former and merged names include:
· White Beach

The community got its start as a resort destination in the late 1800s, when most visitors arrived by boat.

Colonial Beach was incorporated, as a town, in 1892.

In the 20th century, the resort community became a weekend destination, especially because of its casinos.

At one time the community billed itself as "Las Vegas on the Potomac." Today, it more modestly goes by the motto of "Playground on the Potomac."

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 18. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 5.6 per 1,000 people.
