Profile for Manassas, Virginia, VA

Major Civil War battles were fought here in 1861 and 1862.

Another battle, more recent, involved the Walt Disney Company and its plans to build a theme park here. Opponents, fearing that the park would create sprawl and encroach on the historic battlefield, blocked the project.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 138. The number of murders and homicides was 4. The violent crime rate was 3.7 per 1,000 people.

Manassas received national attention for October 2002 shooting death of a 53-year old man outside a local gas station. He was one of the victims of the sniper shootings.
