The community was settled by English immigrants in 1630, one month before the settling of Boston.
For over 200 years, the community remained agriculturally focused.
The arrival of the railroad, first in 1835, and streetcars, in 1856, changed the area greatly, making it more densely settled.
Following World War II, the area suffered from mass exodus to the suburbs.
The community was annexed by the city of Boston in 1870.
