It is the county seat.

One tradition says the name derives from the French term for "beautiful hill."

Beaumont is on the lower Neches River.

Founded by fur trappers and explorers.

The famous Spindletop oil well blew near here in 1901, marking the opening of the vast oil deposits of the coastal plains of Texas and Louisiana.
