The Humble Oil and Refining Company - which became part of Exxon - purchased 30,000 acres of ranch land, which was owned by James Marion West, in 1938.
The area was selected as the site of the Manned Spacecraft Center - with later became the Johnson Space Center - in 1961.
In the early 1960s, Humble began developing the area into a residential area.
Houston annexed the community in 1977.
