Jefferson is on Big Cypress Bayou.

Briefly, a river port for steamboats from New Orleans. River traffic ended in 1873, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers removed a log-jam in the Red River, greatly reducing water levels around Jefferson.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 12. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 5.9 per 1,000 people.
