Mason is on the Llano River.
Fort Mason was established here in 1851, initiating growth in the area.

The fort, though unimportant strategically, fell under Confederate control during the Civil War. Indian raids were troublesome to area residents at this time.

Mason became the county seat in 1869.

Mason incorporated in 1945.
