A busy port in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Oxford boomed for a short time in the late 1800s as a shipping center for oysters.

The Oxford-Bellevue ferry, first established in 1683, claims to be the oldest ferry serive in the country that's run privately.

Author James Michener often ate at the Robert Morris Inn during the time he was working on "Chesapeake."
