Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 10. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 3.8 per 1,000 people.

Libby received national attention for widespread illness among local residents, traced to asbestos dust from a local W.R. Grace and Co. mine that produced vermiculite for insulation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began cleanup in 1999.
