Bethel is at the mouth of the Kuskokwim River, in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.

Founded by Eskimos who named the community after a local fish smokehouse.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 68. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 11.4 per 1,000 people.

Bethel received national attention for 1997 school shootings in which the principal and one student are killed, and two others injured.
