Sitka is on Baranof Island, at the base of Mt. Edgecumbe.

The Russian American Company established a post here in 1799. It was once the capital of the territory.

When Russia sold Alaska to the United States in 1867, the official transfer took place here.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 17. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 1.9 per 1,000 people.
