The community was first settled by Puritans in 1830.
In 1804, the city of Boston annexed the neighborhood, which at that time was a part of Dorchester and called Great Neck.
Shortly after annexation into Boston, in the early 19th century, industrial development in the community exploded.
In the 1840s, Irish immigrants began coming to the area, seeking refuge from the potato famine. They were, by and large, the city's first Catholic residents.
