Profile for Takoma Park, Maryland, MD

The community was developed in the 1880s as a streetcar suburb. The original community included what is now the Takoma neighborhood of D.C.

The community was incorporated, as a town, in 1890.

Takoma Park was at one time a part of both Montgomery and Prince George's counties. However, in 1997, the state allowed Montgomery County to absorb the section of Takoma Park in Prince George's County.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 106. The number of murders and homicides was 2. The violent crime rate was 5.9 per 1,000 people.
