Santa Catalina Island is off the Los Angeles coast.

Once a base for otter hunters.

Chewing gum king William Wrigley bought the island in 1919.

Because so much of the island is protected from development, little has changed here in recent decades.

Buffalo were brought to the island for a 1924 movie shoot; a herd of about 200 still roams the island interior.

Santa Catalina Island received national attention for May 2007 wildfires that scorched thousands of acres; the 1981 drowning death of actress Natalie Wood

Filming location for:
· 1935 movie, "Mutiny on the Bounty"
· 1971 movie, "Bless The Beasts and Children"
· 1992 movie, "Far and Away"
